There are plenty of books on how to design characters. Plenty more that do a study on how to draw in a specific art specific style. Art matters to people, and character design can have a lasting impact when executed with consideration. The Mascot Bible is a study of brand mascot character design, and how important it is to the graphic design process.
This book is a collection of article quotes, a creative exercise bank, and includes writing by myself on the topic. All of the illustrations were done digitally, aside from the sketches involved in the design of the layout and main mascot character.
